Barbara “Berne” Smith is a professional artist sculptor who creates award winning Porcelain & Clay Stoneware works of traditional realism which express relationships, behavior and perspective of animals interacting with their daily environment. Ms. Smith’s insights are gained from a lifetime of working with and observing animals. Owning and living on a farm in central Virginia, along with extensive international travel, provides her a constant window on the personalities and activities of animals in their natural surroundings that inspire her creative works. Ms. Smith is an Elected/Juried Artist Member of the Salmagundi Art Club (SCNY), Signature Member of The American Artists Professional League Inc. (AAPL), Elected Member of Audubon Artists Inc. (AA), Member of the National Sculpture Society (NSS), and Member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).

Ms. Smith’s works have been exhibited in over 60 National & International Juried Exhibitions. Her sculptures have been honored with major awards, including the “Marilyn Newmark Memorial Award” for Artistic Excellence at the 88^th annual American Artists Professional League (AAPL) Grand National Exhibition; the “Blick Art Award” for Artistic Excellence at the 91^ST annual AAPL Grand National Exhibition; the Award of Merit for Outstanding Sculpture at the December 2023 Salmagundi Club New York Thumb-box Exhibition, and The Juror’s Choice Award at the 15^th Biennial Kentucky National Wildlife Art Exhibit in October 2024. “The Kentucky National Wildlife Art Exhibit ranks among the top three juried wildlife art exhibitions in the country” states DeVere Burt, Director Emeritus of the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History.
